    Creating A Guestbook

The thing about the guestbook is, it's not a feature of MSN Spaces, it's a cunning use of the blog and list features.

    Basically, do the following:

    1. Create a blog entry called: Guestbook
    2. In that entry, type a message that invites people to leave you a comment.
    3. Publish that blog entry
    4. Preview your space
    5. Click on 'Permalink' at the bottom of the Guestbook blog entry.
    6. Copy the Permalink link for later use.
    7. Create a new custom list called: Guestbook
    8. Add one entry to the list called: Leave a message (or something similar to that).
    9. Set the link for that list entry to be the permalink you copied in stage 5.
    10. Customise your space and place the list called Guestbook wherever you want.

To start with your Guestbook blog entry will be on your front page, but as you add blog entries it'll become hidden and all you're left with is a list that links directly to it.

Read Permalink Tutorial for better understanding.

A special thanks to Wesley for this manual.

    what is a Permalink?

When you Publish a Blog you may need its Permailnk / URL to Link it on to one of Your Custom lists on your space or Create a Guestbook.

This is How you get the Permalink:

    • Publish your Blog Entry.
    • Go to "Preview" Mode by clicking on 'Preview My Space'
    • Navigate to the Blog you have Posted.
    • At the Bottom of the Blog entry, there will be something like :

    • Click on the Permalink to get the permalink link of your blog entry.

    •  Right click, Copy..

Now you can use this URL to direct or link it anywhere on your Blog.

    Thanks Dev

    Walt Mossberg's review

Walt Mossberg reviews MSN Spaces.  Here are some highlights.  COOL.

    Quote

    WSJ.com - Personal Technology

Microsoft says it already has more than seven million blogs in Spaces, and is adding new ones at a rate of over 100,000 a day.

My verdict: MSN Spaces is very well done. It makes it easy to create a simple, attractive blog with text, links and photos, and to customize the blog in interesting ways.

    ...

Still, MSN Spaces is a good, basic blogging service that I can recommend to any novice blogger.

    Thanks Mike

blogging: don't sweat the little things ... oh wait, we should

Blogging was one of the first features we released on Spaces. Since then we've gotten a lot of feedback  about these 'little' things that annoy our users. Thanks to all our users out there that reported these things to us and helped us make the experience better.

Who cares what date I posted my blog entry on? It's still damn good.

While your blog entries are ordered reverse chronologically, doesn't mean that the date is the most important thing. Lots of people complained that the way that blog entries were displayed make it look like date was more important than the title or your content. There's something about emphasizing 'not today' that makes things seem less appealing. Well now you can change that - for those out there were content is way more important than the point in time it was posted, you can now choose to display where the date/timestamp gets shown. At the top (as it was before), or down at the bottom of the entry.

Rinse, Repeat - Why can't I multi-delete comments/trackbacks on blog entries? My finger is tired from all this clicking.

Yeah, we know hitting the "X", and then hitting the OK on the delete confirmation dialog is a pain in the butt, especially when you want to delete a bunch of things. Now you can multi-delete comments/trackbacks (even entries if you decide that chronicaling your love life over the last couple of months was a bad idea and you want to wipe out any record of that)

    • Sign into your space
    • Click on the blog tab in the navigation across the top OR in your blog module click on "view entry details"
    • Click on the (+) to expand comments or trackbacks on an entry
    • Check the box(es) beside the items you want to delete
    • Click on "Delete selected items"
    • And click OK on the dialog to confirm.
    • Ta-da!

I just want to respond to a comment!

You log into your space and are reading new comments and stuff. You notice a comment that someone left you, and all you want to do respond with by leaving a comment. Too bad to leave a comment you have to go to the 'preview' or public view, find that entry (which may or may not be on your front page), and then finally leave a comment. Geez I'm tired just thinking about it. Wouldn't it be nice that when you're looking at that comment, you could click a link to add a comment and magically go to that entry? Now you can!

Help! I'm stuck in a category and I can't get out.

Ever clicked on a category to see what else was related and then couldn't get back to the view of all entries? It's kinda silly and we agree. So we've added a link to "view all categories" which gets you back to the default view.

I click on a blog entry from a contact card in messenger and then I dont know where to go OR I want to read more but I can't figure out how to get to the rest of the entries

On the first thing - Previously when you clicked on a blog update from the contact card in Messenger, you landed on the permalink page (the permanent 'link' to that particular entry). It wasn't obvious that you could read more blog entries or go other places in the space. While this problem is still being solved (ie. exciting stuff coming in another release), its way easier to get to the next entry.

For the second thing, users can choose how many entries they want to show on their front page. We didn't make it easy for a visitor to your space to figure out to get to the rest of your entries to keep on reading. Now there's a 'View more entries" link at the bottom of your blog module on your front page.

Delete a photo from a published blog entry.
Ever clicked on add photo and then really really regretted it because there was no easy way to de-associate that photo with your blog entry? And you either had to start a new blog entry, or publish the entry and then do a scramble to delete the photo from the settings > storage page. Yeah, also not very usable. Now when you go to a blog entry that has a photo associated with it, you can easily remove it right then and there. Don't forget you should always publish your entry (after you've made changes/removed photos)

Like really, I'm SICK AND TIRED OF LOSING MY BLOG ENTRIES!

uhm, yeah, so are we. Some times I swear at my computer but that doesn't really help. Eileen (one of our super fantastic devs) worked on improving this so that this happens less. (Mind you, if you decide to unplug your computer in the middle of adding/editing a blog entry we still can't help you.)

So there you go, blogging improvements just for you. Well, ok and me...and the other millions of users on spaces. Keep the feedback coming!

    Thanks Karen

Skobee Just Launched - So Start Using It

I’ve been tracking Skobee, headquartered in San Francisco, since I first saw founder Noam Lovinsky demo it at a recent event at Stanford. Noam took me through a demo of the product again earlier this week to refresh my memory, and he opened the doors to the service earlier this evening.

If you plan events with friends using email, Skobee is going to make your life a lot easier.

Instead of contacting all of the friends you would like to plan an event with through the normal channels (IM, email, phone, etc.) and trying to keep things organized, Skobee has a dead simple and better way to handle it. Create a new event, put in vague (or definite) information on location and date/time, and add emails for people you’d like to include.

Skobee will then send out emails to each person along with the current event information, and they can register for the site if they are a new user (viral business model - yes). Here’s where things get interesting: those people can add new participants, and suggest changes to the date or place by leaving a comment with natural language, such as “How about Tuesday instead, and we’ll meet at TechCrunch”. Skobee will structure the data and update the event information for everyone. And even better: instead of logging into the site and leaving a comment, participants can simple “reply all” to the email, which includes “plans@skobee.com”, and skobee will figure out what event is being discussed, add a comment to the event page automatically, and update accordingly.

I’ve used Skobee to plan an event this week (see screen shot below), and all of the above functionality works pretty flawlessly.

Future plans include an “after party” page where Skobee will automatically pull flickr pictures from users and incude them on the page. Noam says this will be based on picture metadata time to know if the pictures apply, although I recommended that they use flickr tags instead or in addition to the metadata from the photos.

    Skobee rocks.

More Info on Microsoft “Expo” Beta

Microsoft has renamed its Fremont project to “Expo” and have put up a landing page, complete with a request for email once it launches. They have also included a screenshot:

The Expo team, led by Garry Wiseman, has also posted information about the service, which will be tightly integrated with MSN Messenger and MSN Spaces. Listings will be free:

    What it is
An online marketplace and social networking site

    What it gives you

    • Free ads that are easy to post
    • Browse through a wide range of categories ranging from merchandise,
    events, personals and services
    • Keep your dealings within a trusted network like your MSN Messenger Buddies , friends or co-workers; or open them up to anyone
    • Find listings just in your area, nationwide or anywhere in between
    • Add your listings to your MSN Space with one easy click
    • Get detailed maps and directions for things like garage sales, homes for sale or concerts
    • Communicate with people via MSN Messenger right from Expo’s site

I have been testing the service, and there are features that are top notch. This is going to be an impressive product.

Embed Flash Games in your Blog

I originally wrote about Bunchball during the Web 2.0 conference last fall. They relaunched their product on February 1, 2006

The core technology is the same, but bunchball has changed their interface, focus and messaging. From their profile request:

We’re a place for users to come play multi-player Flash “games” with small groups of friends, or easily take them and put them into their own web pages and blogs, to play with their visitors.

This is the important new thing about Bunchball that we added after the Web 2.0 conference (along with a completely new, 100x better UI) - the ability to take any game and put it into a web page.

Games can be anything from arcade type games to chat, to photo and music sharing.

For developers, we provide quick deployment of existing games (minutes), and an API to our multi-player platform - giving them more opportunities to have their games be viral and the ability to create multiplayer games faster than ever before.

The focus is now on allowing people to easily create flash games, and syndicate them to the edge on blogs and websites. I’ve embedded a version of Asteroids below, which is playable on this site. Games can be multi-player, and chat is integrated. I hope bunchball doesn’t pull an “ajchat” on me and break down.

Bunchball was founded by Rajat Paharia and Sunil Singh and is based in silicon valley.

    Using the <HTML> Function

This Tool lets you add and customize stuff on your Blog entry. It basically lets you Enable HTML so you can put Extra Stuff into your Blog entry in HTML Code.

    HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

    • Click on the <HTML> button in your Blog editing Tool set.
    • You Screen Turns white and a Funny "<Div> <Div> " code appears, Ignore it.
    • You will be pasting HTML codes under this. These codes you will learn from other <HTML> Tutorials all over this space.

That is all you need to know about the <HTML> Button for the moment...

Now add background Music to your Blog!

Not many people know about this, but it's possible to add a background music to your Blog on MSN Spaces!
    Just follow these simple steps:
    1. Log into Passport and Edit your Space.
    2. Add a new Blog or edit an existing blog, wherever u wish to place your music.
    3. Click the <HTML> button.
    4. Place the following code over there:

      <img loop=infinite dynsrc="your link" width=0 height=0 border=0>

    5. Click Publish entry
    6. Enjoy your new cool musical blog!!

Note: Please keep in mind that this only works when using Internet Explorer because of some sort of ActiveX scripts stuff! If you're using another browser (FireFox, Opera, etc.), you won't be able to ear any music.

Update: To get favourite music link go here. Then replace your link with your song's URL!

    Keep the feedback coming!

    Talking about Live Favorites

The Spaces Team has just released an update to Spaces that fixes a lot of bugs and addresses some of the issues users have let us know about.  For a complete list please go to The Space Craft at http://spaces.msn.com/thespacecraft.

This release also includes a new module, the Windows Live Favorites Beta module.  This allows you to share your selected Live Favorites on your space.  Setting it up is really easy, go to the Customize menu and add it from the Modules drop down.  If you don’t have a Windows Live Favorites account you’ll see a link in the module to go create one.  On the Windows Live Favorites site (http://favorites.live.com/) you can even import your Favorites from your computer, which I found really helpful.

Be default all of the Favorites in your account are private, so only you can see them.  To make a favorite public go to the Windows Live Favorites site, right-click on the favorite, and go to Properties.  Check the box for ‘Share This Favorite’, click Ok.  (See the pic below)  The favorite will now show up in the Public Favorites tab and will appear in the Windows Live Favorites Beta module on your Space.

If you use Windows Live you can add the Windows Live Favorites gadget to your Live page.  Plus there’s an add-in for the MSN Search Toolbar.  Check it out.  I have found Live Favorites really useful, no more adding favorites to my office desktop, laptop, and home computers, everything is right there when I need it.

Update:  I forgot to mention that this module is only available in the United States in Spaces created in the US market.  We're looking at expanding it to other markets later.

    Go here for more information.

    Questions about sponsored links

Do you have questions about 'sponsored links'? Karen has written something really helpful.

    Quote

We've gotten a bunch of questions about the sponsored links module:

    1. Uhh, I don't think mine is working. I've added it to my space and it says "Sponsored links will appear in this space". What gives?

The sponsored links will appear in that space for your visitors. When you're in "edit mode"  of your space or signed into your space (like when you hit "preview"), we don't show you sponsored links there since that area is used to display status/messages about your account, the link to manage your account, tips, and also so you know where your links are going to show up in your space layout (ie. you can drag and drop the module just like any other one). Obviously for visitors they don't see any of this stuff, just the sponsored links.

    2. Ok, looks like ads are there, but these links have absolutely nothing to do with anything on my space. Aren't they supposed to be contextual? Wasn't that the whole point?

Yes, the links will be relevant to your content but it takes a couple of days to get the relevance fine tuned to your space's content after you sign up. You should see more relevant ads after about a week. Also - remember that the links are based on your blog content. So in order for your kanoodle sponsored links to be performant and relevant, you'll need to have a blog and actually write stuff :)

    3. I read something in the sign up about needing to write in English and I have to be in the US or Canada? Howcome?

Sponsored links can only be provided for English sites, since the ads that are served are only available in english and the relevance matching requires the content to be in english. If you don't blog in English, you will not be able to use the sponsored links. We know other countries/languages want this too - we hear ya!

Ok - I think that's those are the big questions we've heard people asking. Keep the feedback coming!

    cash dollah bling bling!

ok, that's not the name of the feature, but you can make some money off your space just doing what you do. We know you put a lot of thought into the stuff you blog about and the lists you make - so here's an incentive to keep up the good work!

(note - not all these features are available in all markets, but we're working on it)

Book lists made better with Amazon integration

Already got a list of 'what you're reading?'? Sick of all that manual data entry just to make your book list item link to SOMETHING? Well, your book lists just got better looking with the cover of the book + auto linking to amazon. The best part? You can sign up to be an amazon associate and even earn some money back from people who click through and buy the item you've listed. (You should read the Amazon Associates' terms of service - this is feature is not meant to replace your day job! Abusers beware!)

Targeted sponsored links for your blog that generate revenue with Kanoodle (add module and sign up via your space for the Spaces experience)

Been blogging on Spaces? Writing some stuff and wish you could get something out if it? You can add a Sponsored links module to your space to start generating revenue. The more you blog, the more relevant your sponsored links will be. Where do the links show up? You can place them anywhere on your space and will show up to visitors to your space, but remember, if you don't put them somewhere people can see them, then no one will click on them and you won't make any money. When you add the sponsored links to your space and create your account, we'll also show this on the blog tab so that people that click through from the contact card will also see your links. This feature is only available to users in the US and Canada, and only if you're blogging in english - don't forget to read Kanoodle's terms of service when you sign up for your account! Sorry folks :( we're working on getting similar things set up for more countries/markets.

Karen, keep up the good work!

Hi everyone!  As I am sure you can imagine, we get a lot of support questions, both here on the Blog360, but also through the support system! I have cataloged the top questions! Hope this answers some questions you have!

    MSN Spaces Commonly Asked Questions:

    Q. Why can’t I add Photos to my Space ?

    A. Are you using Internet Explorer (v. 6.0 or higher)?  If so, it should work.  At this time, the Photo slideshow part for MSN Spaces is does not work with other browsers such as Firefox, Netscape or Safari or Internet Explorer 5.X

    Q. How do I change the name (alias) for my Space ?

    A. You can not change the alias of your Space without first deleting your existing Space.  Once you delete your existing Space, you can sign up for a new one with your Passport.

    Q. Can I have multiple Passports associated with one Space?

    A. Currently, only one Passport can be associated with a Space.

    Q. How do I delete my Space?

    A. Sign in to your Space, click on Settings and select the Space Settings tab. At the bottom of the page, click on the “Delete my space” option and confirm.  Reminder that once you chose to delete it, you can’t get the information back.  If you think you might want to return to MSN Spaces in the future, you could set your Space to private so only you can view it.  Then, if you decide in the future that you want to start using Spaces again, you can change the setting to Public or Messenger only.

    Q. How do I change the color or background of my Space?

    A. Changing the color or background of your Space is easy.  Simply sign into your Space, click on Customize and select the Themes tab. More on Live Favorites

How many times have you found a really cool web site that you want to share with your friends?  How many times have you been asked a question that can be answered with a web site you’ve seen before, and now you have to go find it and send it out again?  You’ve spent so much time browsing the internet, collecting your favorite links, carefully organizing and sorting them.  Wouldn’t it be great to be able to share them with your friends or the world?  Now you can with Windows Live Favorites and the now available Live Favorites Spaces module.

    How does this work?

Live Favorites allows you to store, sort, and share your Internet Favorites online.  You create an account in Live Favorites and add your internet favorites.  You can then access your favorites anytime, anywhere and then you can share them with friends and others.

    With Live Favorites you can:
Access your favorites anytime, anywhere by signing into the Live Favorites website
Import / Export your favorites using the Live Favorites MSN Toolbar Plug-in
Share your favorites via MSN Spaces and the new Windows Live Favorites sharing module

    How do I get started?

There are two parts to this: creating your Live Favorites account and sharing your favorites.

To create your Live Favorites account: go to http://favorites.live.com and click the “Sign In” link in the upper right-hand corner.  Once you sign in via Passport, your account will be created for you.  Now start uploading your favorites:
Use the “Add Favorite” button in the upper left-hand corner to add a new favorite
Use the “Import” button in the upper left-hand corner to import your favorites from Internet Explorer
Download and install the Live Favorites Toobar Plug-In for MSN Toolbar to have access to both of these features from your toolbar

To share your favorites, do the following:
If you use the “Add Favorite” button on the web-site, select the option to share the favorite
If you import your favorites, go to the web site, select a favorite, right click, go to “Properties”, and select to share the favorite

You can now show others your shared favorites by simply adding the “Windows Live Favorites” module to your Space.

Please note that the “Windows Live Favorites” module is currently only available in the United States (English).   We will be extending support to international markets soon, please stay tuned to the Live Favorites Space for updates.

Store Web Content Offline with Webaroo

For those of us who are still offline sometimes and want access to at least some web content (me) and running a Windows machine (not me), Santa Clara based Webaroo will be a useful service. It launched today.

Webaroo indexes the “highest quality” websites for content and creates topic based web packs for download. The content in those webpacks is stored offline on your computer and updated periodically. To test it, I fired up my old PC, installed the 5 MB application, and downloaded the World News and San Francisco web packs. You can also ask Webaroo to index specific websites for offline viewing. I added TechCrunch.

Then I unplugged from the net and tried it out. The webpacks were great, allowing me to search or browse content. I would love this on a plane. The specific website index didn’t work out so well - all formatting and CSS was stripped from the page and the site looked horrible. Still, the content was there.

Webaroo also allowed me to choose to index the content linked to from the site, so links from TechCrunch were also viewable. Great feature.

Webaroo is also available for mobile devices running the Windows Pocket PC operating system. And they announced their first deal with a PC manufacturer, Acer, to pre install Webaroo on new Acer laptops. More on Memeorandum.
